Reading the theme

An artwork can seem permanent, a song immortal and a dream more persuasive than waking life. Yet these poems also expose the costs of escape: stillness can become sterility, and fantasy must eventually return to time.

Follow each poem's turns carefully. A claim made early in an ode or meditation may be corrected, complicated or abandoned by the final lines.

Questions to carry across poems

  1. Where does the speaker's perception change?
  2. What can art preserve, and what can it never possess?
  3. How do questions or contradictions keep the poem open?
