A Noiseless Patient Spider

What the poem means
Watching a spider cast filaments into empty space, the speaker recognises an image of the soul seeking connection in a vast universe.
The first stanza observes precise physical action; the second repeats its key verbs as the soul launches thought, relation and desire outward. The hoped-for anchoring never occurs within the poem, so patient making matters more than guaranteed connection.

Stanza 1. A NOISELESS, patient spider, I mark’d, where, on a little promontory, it stood, isolated; Mark’d how, to explore the vacant, vast surrounding, It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself; Ever unreeling them—ever tirelessly speeding them.
