Misleading ads and unfair practices

Other language: हिंदी

Separate a misleading claim, an individual purchase dispute and public-interest enforcement.

Section 2(28) describes misleading advertisements, including falsely describing a product or service, false guarantees, representations likely to mislead about specified qualities, and deliberate concealment of important information. Section 2(47) describes unfair trade practices. Save the actual claim, its date, conditions and your transaction record; an edited screenshot or unsupported accusation may hide the very context that matters.

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has public-interest powers under sections 18–21, including specified investigation, recall and advertising directions or penalties. Section 17 addresses complaints about matters prejudicial to consumers as a class. A Consumer Commission considers an individual dispute and available relief through a different process. CCPA enforcement, a seller refund and a Commission compensation order are not interchangeable outcomes; select the appropriate official channel without assuming one report automatically grants all three.

Fictional example

Fictional example: an advertisement promises a feature that the supplied product lacks. Ravi keeps the dated advertisement and invoice. He separately identifies his purchase remedy and whether the advertisement affects consumers as a class, rather than confusing enforcement penalties with money payable to him.
