BNSS First Schedule: Classification of Offences under the BNS

Part I of the First Schedule to the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 classifies every offence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita: its punishment, whether it is cognizable, whether it is bailable, and which court tries it. In the Schedule, “cognizable” means a police officer may arrest without warrant, and “non-cognizable” means a police officer shall not arrest without warrant.

BNSS First Schedule, Gazette of India Extraordinary No. 54, 25 December 2023. The Schedule gives the substance of the section, not its full definition, and a State may have amended the classification for its territory.
